When king Sejo(ruled for 1455-68) and his troupe climbed over the Maltije mountain pass and arrived at Sangpanri village of Songnisan myeon, there was a umbrella-shaped big pine tree on the road.
They took a rest under the tree. When the king entered the palanquin to continue the journey, he discovered that his palanquin might touch a branch of the tree.
"Be careful of the branch," he cautioned to carriers of the sedan chair. Something strange happened. The hanging branch began to rise up. The king and his troupe passed the village one more time on the return way to Seoul.
When they arrived at the village, they were caught by a shower, and used the tree as cover. the king said, "Strangely, this tree let me pass under it the previous time. Now, it gave us cover from shower, I feel thankful to it." He symbolically bestowed the status of jeong-ee-poom on the pine tree. After that, the tree began to be called, "Planquin-caught Pine Tree," or "Jeong-ee-poom Pine Tree."
